Application Information for International Applicants

International applicants are defined as individuals who hold F-1 or J-1 Visas.

General Procedures
These procedures are for international applicants for the MBA On-Campus, MBA-One and MS in Taxation programs. If you are interested in the MS in Accounting program, please refer to the program's requirements for specific details.

Note: International students are not eligible for MBA/MSE, Master of Science in Transportation Management or Off-Campus MBA programs.

Step 1
Complete your application online at CSUMentor. If you have taken the GMAT, please enter your score. If you have not taken the GMAT yet, please enter a date in order to be able to move forward in the application.

Once you have completed your application, you must pay a non-refundable application fee of $55.00 either online via credit/debit card (the preferred payment method), or mail a check or money order to the Graduate Studies and Research office. If you are mailing a check or money order, be sure to include a copy of the "Application Agreeement Statement" with your payment.

Step 3
International applicants should take the following examinations:

  • Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT): Applicants with 500 or better (with scores at or above the 50th percentile on both the verbal and quantitative sections of the GMAT)will be given priority.
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): Applicants must obtain a minimum score of 550 (paper score), 213 (computer score), or 80 (internet score).

Step 4

• 2 sets of official transcripts (degree certificates and translations for out of country applicants) from ALL Universities attended
• A statement of Purpose
• A GMAT score report
• Three letters of reference - optional (letters can come from professors and/or employers)
• A Resume - optional

We will compile all of your documentation into one file and when the file is complete, we will deliver your file to the Graduate Studies and Research office so that the evaluation process can begin. We have found that this procedure speeds up the evaluation process, reduces “lost” documents, and increases the Lucas GSB control over the application process.

Mail above documents to:

Lucas Graduate School of Business
San José State University
Business Tower Room 350
One Washington Square
San José, CA 95192-0162

Please note the following important items:
1. On occasion some supplemental documents may be required such as a Residency Questionnaire - Graduate Studies and Research will notify you by email if that is required to complete your application.

2. If you have completed a degree at an institution that is outside of the U.S., please visit our International Document Requirements page and find the country where the institution is located. The list shows different document requirements by countries. Applicants must follow the instructions listed for the particular country, otherwise the documents will be considered to be unofficial.

3. The TOEFL score is required for all students who graduated from a higher education institution outside of the U.S. where the primary language of instruction was not English. Minimum entrance score is 550 or higher (paper based) or 213 or higher (computer based) or 80 (internet score).

The SJSU Graduate Studies and Research Admissions Process

While the Lucas Graduate School of Business office makes the final admissions decision for our business graduate programs, the overall admissions process (for all SJSU graduate programs) is managed by the SJSU Graduate Studies and Research office.

Please click here for more information about the Graduate Studies and Research Office areas of responsibility. We encourage you to familiarize yourself with the requirements, timelines and advice this web page offers. During the application process, please review the information for Prospective Students, including the Frequently Asked Questions section, after enrolling in one of our programs, you can review the information for Current Students.

When all of your required documents are received, the application will be processed by the Graduate Studies and Research office. An evaluator will be assigned to evaluate your grade point average (GPA) and your degree. GPA, degree equivalency, and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores, if required, will be reviewed by Graduate Studies and Research before admission to any SJSU graduate programs. A student account will be created for you to access MYSJSU. From there, you can check your application status and, if accepted, you can see your enrollment date, register for classes and check your schedule. When this process is completed, the application will be forwarded to the Lucas Graduate School of Business for final review and an admissions decision.

You will receive a formal acceptance letter if you fulfill all the requirements. If you are not admitted, you will receive a letter explaining why. We encourage you to re-apply, after you have corrected your area of deficiency.
