44th Annual International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition

Two SJSU teams from the College of Business won top honors at the 44th Annual International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition on April 19, 2008. Prof. Joel West of the Department of Organization & Management served as advisor and coach to both teams. Runner-up not so bad in Business ‘battle’

Four students celebrated their second-place victory, beating Stanford, in the annual Battle of the Bay Undergraduate Case Competition Finals. A celebration was held in the courtyard in front of the Boccardo Business Complex on April 10.

Maryann Cristofi, Kin Liu, Keith Lee and Brian Talarico were the members of the team selected by Cisco Systems, Inc., and Deloitte Consulting representatives to represent SJSU in the Battle of the Bay.

The College of Business honors program receives a $5.2 million gift

Gary J. Sbona made a gift of $5.2 million to the College of Business that will be used to expand the honors program to provide a global dimension. On January 22nd, the CSU Board of trustees approved San Jose State’s request to name the program the “Gary J. Sbona honors program” in Sbona’s honor. Read an SJSU news release.

Accounting and Finance Department receives $50,000 endowment gift

Eugene L. and Suzanne M. Valla have made a leadership gift of $50,000 establishing the Eugene L. and Suzanne M. Valla Faculty Endowment for the Department of Accounting & Finance.

The purpose of this gift is to award an annual stipend for a deserving and outstanding faculty member within the Department of Accounting & Finance. This gift recognizes excellence in teaching within the department.

CoB Announces New 3 Week Study Tour to India in Summer 2008

Course Overview

In addition to being the largest democracy in the world, India is one of the fastest growing economies with almost a double-digit GDP growth rate in the last ten to fifteen years. India is gaining recognition worldwide as a leader many industries and is expected to be the 3rd largest economy in the world by 2050. As with other newly emerging markets, the Indian market, which was hitherto denied the world’s share of consumer goods, represents a coveted market for firms from all over the world, as well as domestic firms who now have to adapt to very dynamic and competitive industry environments.

This three week course (led by Professor Mahesh Rajan in July-Aug 2008) will provide students with a first-hand overview of key trends, opportunities and challenges of doing business in the Indian economy. In addition to lectures from academics and industry leaders, students will visit several major companies and NGOs in Bangalore, the Silicon Valley of India.

This idea is a solar congeneration system which utilizes waste heat from a concentrated photovoltaic (PV) array for an energy input for an industrial absorption refrigeration cycle. Removing waste heat from a PV array will increase electrical efficiency by lowering cell operating temperatures. Heat removed from the PV cells will be suitable to operate an industrial-sized absorption refrigeration. Harnessing the suns energy as both electrical and thermal will improve overall system efficiency while matching hours of maximum cooling demands with maximum sun radiation.

The organization provides a time management service for companies and executives. It is an Internet based service that helps executives and their employees coordinate their calenders (meetings and tasks) online. It can also be used by individuals (working mothers, college students) to help organize daily routines.

MBA Student in the News

This Thanksgiving, when some 300 people are served turkey dinners at two InnVision homeless shelters in San Jose, each of them also will get several pairs of warm socks for the winter.

It’s all thanks to Jennifer Knickerbocker, 30, who organized a ‘’sock drive” to collect used and stray socks for the needy. Knickerbocker, an intern at Cisco, came up with the idea for her MBA class at San Jose State. She hooked up with InnVision and enlisted more than 15 local employers to collect workers’ socks.

She also organized volunteers to sort and bundle the socks with gift ribbons. When my family and I went to help, we were astounded at the heaps of socks — about 10,000 pairs — that covered tables and sofas. InnVision plans to distribute the socks throughout the holiday season.

One person can do a world of good by coming up with a simple idea and acting on it. I’m grateful for people like Jennifer Knickerbocker who can turn a simple concept into something powerful that helps the community.

A Lucas Lecture by Prof Shainesh of IIM Banaglore on Nov. 30

Dr. G. Shainesh, Associate Professor of Marketing and Chairperson of the Student Exchange Program at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore will present his research to College of Business faculty on Friday, November 30. The title of Professor Shainesh’s talk is “Trust Building Process: People vs. Technology Intensive Service Interactions.” Trust is a key determinant of consumer relationship as it influences loyalty, which impacts business performance in competitive markets. Trust is built over time and is shaped by consumer’s interactions and experiences with the service provider. Employee behaviour and practices of service providers influence trust. Trust develops through trustworthiness which has distinct dimensions of expertise, benevolence and problem-solving orientation (Sirdeshmukh, Singh and Sabol, 2002). The relative importance of employees and management practices on trust building process will differ depending on the nature of service and the environment. Professor Shainesh’s study adapts the model of Sirdeshmukh, Singh and Sabol (2002), to assess the impact of service environment on the trust building process. A cross sectional survey covered 450 banking customers. Findings indicate that the loyalty levels are high across banks. However, the relative influence of employees and management practices on consumer trust differs across banks depending on their service provisioning environments. Frontline employees play a decisive role in building trust in public sector banks while management practices and policies play the dominant role in private and foreign banks. Managerial and research implications of the study are discussed.
